Erik Peterson at Biometra Case Analysis - 800 Words

ERIK PETERSON AT BIOMETRA-CASE ANALYSIS EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Biometra is a small company based in the Boston suburb of Woburn which was recently acquired by Scientific Materials (SciMat), in order to deepen its portfolio in vascular medical devices. Biometra focused chiefly on catheters, or tubes used to drain or inject fluids or to allow access of surgical instruments for medical procedures. The catheter would be the first product ever launched by Biometra and so its success was critical for both the companies. Erik Peterson was hired as the Product Manager in charge of sales and marketing of Biometra’s catheter, shortly after completing his MBA. Hardy had no prior operating experience and was unable to offer Peterson any helpful advice or guidance. Due to lack of effective communication from the leadership, Peterson was not sure whom he would be reporting to which could mean further delays in getting approvals on his decisions. 3) Unsatisfactory Interpersonal relation s: Peterson failed to establish pleasant relations with Dr. Scott Green and Karen Cantor both of whose work he challenged and criticized during his orientation in SciMat. There was a possibility that some of his team members (Andrews and Miczek) resented his sudden promotion to General Manager. Peterson was also in the midst of internal conflicts between some of the team members which made it more difficult to concentrate on the final goal of product launch. 4) Inability to build and lead a team: As per the case, there is no fact to suggest that Erik Peterson made efforts to unite his team to achieve a very ambitious goal of launching the catheter in the stated period. Oliver Twist: A Look at Social and Economic Classes Ricas Jones English IV Ms. McQuirk 22 March 2017 Oliver Twist: A Look at Social and Economic Classes Charles Dickens’ uses Oliver Twist as a means of informing the masses of his views on the differences in the treatment of social and economic classes, while focusing primarily on the unfavorable treatment of the poor. From the unfavorable orphanages to the workhouses to the elements of crime, Oliver Twist shows that the struggle of the poor starts early and is long lasting. There are few elements in place to improve their lives. From birth to death, they are forced to endure neglect, mistreatment, and a never-ending list of bad choices. It detailed how the children of privilege should be proud of the care that was shown to them. â€Å"Look at this picture well, you little, bright happy children who are well and strong, or even any afflicted like these, and be g rateful for the cheerful homes, the loving friends, the comforts which surround you!† (Pediatrics, 1981). This article in particular goes on to speak about the poor treatment during infancy and how it has a tendency to extend into childhood and adulthood. Another example of disregard for the poor can be found in the ritual of disguising the unfair treatment that was received. When officials were preparing to visit orphanages and check on the conditions of the children, advance notice was made. â€Å"Besides, the board made periodical pilgrimages to the farm, and always sent the beadle the day before, to say they were going† (Dickens, 2004). This allowed Mrs. Mann, and similar caretakers, to prepare the children for inspection. Daily needs that were usually overlooked, such as baths, were a luxury that the orphans could look forward to at these times. Workhouses were brought into existence to help the poor and elderly deal with the daily difficulties of life. Organizational Function of Finance within Wal-Mart is that every businesses goal is to make a profit worth staying in business for. Organizational Function of Finance comes with trying to figure out when is the need to let some of your employees go in order to increase operational efficiencies, support strategic growth plans and help reduce their overall costs. Now the organizational function of Human Resources within Wal-Mart makes it mandatory for employees to train on diversity and ethics. They also conduct more training sessions on leadership, customer ervice, and mentoring programs. Organizational Design is the alignment of structure, process, rewards, metrics and talent with the strategy of the business. Organizational Design may involve strategic decisions, but is properly viewed as a path to effective strategy execution. Departmentalization in a corporation means for a corporation to be divided into different divisions and each division within the company has its own goals and task to accomplish. A divisional structure is broken down into three different areas such as product, market, and geographic. Managers have a responsibility to focus on the structure of the store and bring in positive results. Another organizational design is product structure, market structure, and geographic structure. Geographic structures groups their employees based on the geographical location which Wal-Mart uses this structure because it has stores running globally. Finally matrix structure groups their employees by function and product within the different departments. This structure is one of the most difficult structures. An example is Sam’s Club and Wal-Mart International being organized as follows, sales department, customer service, and accounting. However Sam’s Club is a little bit different because they would have the same departments, but have their own projects and tasks. In conclusion, Wal-Mart being a successful retail store has a horizontal Structure. It was compared and contrasted to the second largest retail store in Target. Organizational functions in marketing are simplicity and constantly push for being the low price leader. Organizational function in finance has a goal of keeping their CEO happy and customers happy at all times. Organizational function in human resources and operation is where they often train in different areas such as diversity and ethics. Organizational design helps Wal-Mart determine what best fits them and their corporation as a whole.
